Pulling himself out of that line of thought, Kelly focused on his status once again, still struggling to believe what he was seeing. The sheer difference was absurd.
’These stats are almost equal to Agawa’s when he was at the same level... some of them even surpass his.’
Kelly compared his current level and stats to what he remembered of Agawa before they had left for that expedition. Of course, after everything that had happened since then, there was no telling how much stronger Agawa had become.
’But still... with Gluttony...’
As his thoughts reached that point, something inside him shifted. And not for the better.
’What if... I keep using Gluttony? I’m pretty sure I could defeat beasts like the one I killed before much more easily now... and if I keep devouring them... if I keep killing... then what if I go even further and kill stronger beasts? And what would happen if... I devoured the Hero himself?’
Something inside Kelly grew darker. He didn’t even realize it at first. It was as if the greedy instincts of a beast had begun taking control of him, whispering into the deepest parts of his mind. He wanted to take. To consume. To plunder everything before him. His soul ached with a hunger he couldn’t even describe. A hunger that felt endless.
But the moment those thoughts fully formed, Kelly violently shook his head, forcing himself out of that dangerous mental state.
’What the fuck is wrong with me...? How can I even think like this? Why do I want to hurt...? Just what is happening? This isn’t me. It feels like I’m becoming some kind of beast... wait...’
As his thoughts reached that point, Kelly’s mind jolted with sudden realization as he remembered the warning that woman had given him.
’Are these the changes she warned me about...? These primal instincts... these feelings of ingratitude... and this overwhelming greed... like I’ve turned into some kind of beast with no human conscience.’
A cold chill ran down his spine. What if she had never warned him? What if he had remained completely ignorant of these changes until it was too late? What if he kept believing those thoughts were truly his own?
What if he reached a point where he could no longer distinguish between his own mind and the instincts of that beast those savage impulses slowly mixing with his own until he became nothing more than a mindless monster?
Maybe he was exaggerating. Maybe he was overthinking. But still...What if
’Too many what-ifs... no. I have to find a way to control it. I can’t rely on this. For fuck’s sake, thank God I met her before waking up... otherwise, I don’t know how long it would have taken me to realize all of this on my own.’
And just like that, as if that woman had somehow foreseen the future, the last bit of caution Kelly had toward her disappeared.
In its place, he felt something else.
A quiet, subconscious sense of indebtedness.
’But that hunger... that wasn’t just beastly instinct. It was something else... it felt like...’
Kelly couldn’t even properly describe it. The answer felt like it was right there, sitting at the tip of his tongue, but no matter how much he reached for it, he just couldn’t grasp it.
’We’ll deal with that later... let’s just leave that shit for future Kelly to handle.’
After some time, Kelly simply gave up and very easily tossed the responsibility onto his future self.
’Now holy shit, my stats... I am fucking strong.’
The excitement came rushing back almost instantly as he thought about his current status. To call those numbers outstanding would have been an understatement. They were absurd.
’Maybe now I can cross a mountain with one leap... or destroy anything I punch.’
Kelly thought that with amusement, remembering the very first conversation he had with Agawa. He didn’t even realize how unstable his emotions had become. One moment, he felt like he was standing above the clouds, on top of the world.
The next, he was drowning in depression as if someone had stolen the moon from his sky. The emotional fluctuations were far from normal. But Kelly, for all his intelligence, wasn’t emotionally mature enough to realize just how badly his feelings were spiralling out of control. It was as if his mind was producing emotions at a reckless speed, forcing him from one extreme to another without warning.
Of course, that was something he wouldn’t truly understand until much later.
’But I still need to test it out. With how I am now, and with my stats increasing so suddenly, it’s going to take time to get familiar with the new power inside me... right now, I can’t even move at my fastest speed without disorienting myself and nearly falling over.’
He kept thinking of ways to increase his combat power, ways to make up for the lack of control he still felt over his own body. No matter how much stronger he had become, strength without control was dangerous. Kelly understood that clearly. As he mentally prepared himself, planning what he needed to do next, he suddenly felt it. A strange discomfort. A twisting sensation deep inside his stomach. His expression stiffened.
"Ugh... hmm..."
The sudden sound of someone clearing their throat echoed through the cave, instantly breaking whatever inner turmoil Kelly had been drowning in.
Understanding the very obvious undertone of frustration behind that sound, Kelly slowly turned his head toward Kei, his current companion in this strange paradise.
The moment he looked at her, he saw it.
Her brows were tightly drawn together in an extreme frown, like a bow stretched to its absolute limit, her anger practically trembling on the verge of being released.
And just like that, Kelly became tongue-tied again.
’Now what am I supposed to tell her...? It’s already awkward enough as it is.’
Honestly, Kelly wasn’t usually like this. He wasn’t the type of person who could casually strike up conversations with anyone and everyone, but he also wasn’t so socially awkward that he didn’t know how to talk to a woman. At least... normally.
’Should I talk about the weather?’
Kelly swallowed the saliva gathering in his mouth and tried to speak, but the moment he saw the dark expression on Kei’s face, something deep inside him told him not to.
’Yeah... no way in hell I’m talking about that. Anyway, there’s no weather to even talk about. Genius move, really.’
Kelly thought sarcastically.
However, no matter how chaotic his emotions were on the inside, his face remained as cold and unreadable as ever, barely revealing even a fraction of what was going through his mind.
"Hahhhh..."
