Chapter 574 574: Hagrid’s Makeover Part 2
Chapter 574 574: Hagrid’s Makeover Part 2
"Haha…" Michael said with a laugh, "Wade is very skilled at this spell, and he's even got the Ministry's approval for it."
"So jealous… I want to learn…" Astoria asked eagerly, "Will the Spells Study Group teach it in the future?"
"If there's a chance," Wade replied. "So… shall we get started?"
At the other end of the room, Hagrid clutched his beard in panic. "Wait, wait! I've been growing this beard since I was eighteen… at least leave me a little!"
Daphne said mercilessly, "And keep it for what? Raising lizards?"
"No…" Hagrid said weakly, "Don't you think my beard looks nice? Dumbledore has a beard too!"
"His white beard looks clean," Daphne said, holding up scissors. "Yours… I always suspect the soup that splashes in it might grow mold."
"How could there be soup in it?" Hagrid argued, "I wash it every day."
Daphne's gaze swept him up and down as she asked skeptically, "Really?"
"At least every three days… sometimes five… I do clean it…" Hagrid stammered.
Daphne's hair was practically standing on end. Without another word, she waved her wand, and the scissors darted swiftly past Hagrid's chin.
"Ow—" Hagrid let out a cry as if he'd been cut himself.
With a flick of Wade's wand, all the barely functional odds and ends in the room went flying out— a chair with a broken leg, a chipped bowl, a broom bound together with straw and vines, a fur coat riddled with moth holes, and messy animal specimens.
Hagrid had crammed into his hut everything he thought he might use someday—or that might be useful in the future. Being scatterbrained, he often forgot where he'd put things, and he didn't clean often.
In fact, Wade suspected some spots hadn't been cleaned in fifty years—enough to raise a few nests of doxies.
The others all pitched in. Cleaning spells were nothing new to them—even the youngest, Astoria, could cast them skillfully.
For particularly stubborn grime, they used cleaning agents—magical potions that could also make animal fur smoother and softer. After a thorough cleaning, everything looked brand new.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, Hagrid kept letting out cries under Daphne's "care"—
"My hair!"
"No, put the scissors down… wait, you're trimming my eyebrows too?"
"That's my new coat, Miss Greengrass!"
"That's my special hair oil, not shoe polish… it's really good stuff, leave it alone…"
While the others scrubbed teacups, tidied wardrobes, and repaired tables and chairs, Wade stroked his chin and looked around the hut, which felt more spacious now that most of the junk had been thrown out.
But with Hagrid, all of them, and Fang gnawing on a bone in his dog bed, they were still taking up nearly all the available space—people kept bumping into each other when moving around.
If Hagrid ever invited Madame Maxime over…
Wade imagined the two big figures sitting by the fireplace, and even the air in the room felt crowded.
Remembering all the materials Hagrid had generously given him before, Wade waved his wand and cast several Undetectable Extension Charms on the hut.
Hermione picked up a tray with a clean teapot and cups, intending to put them into the cupboard.
When she turned around, she instinctively drew her arms in—then realized everyone around her was at least two feet away.
"Huh?"
The girl felt a bit puzzled, but when Astoria lifted a hat to place it on the rack, Hermione forgot her strange feeling and set the tray down to help.
Harry and the others were even more careless; when they noticed the space seemed to have become roomier, they were instantly filled with a sense of accomplishment.
"Wow, just tidying up a bit makes the house feel bigger."
Ron turned back and called out loudly to Hagrid, "Hagrid, don't go picking up so much junk again! Of course, if you see unicorn tail hairs, you still can't miss even one."
He carefully cleaned a bundle of unicorn tail hairs and hung them beside the window, where the light streaming in from outside seemed to become purer.
"Aw…" Hagrid looked mournfully at the hair and beard scattered all over the floor, then said to Ron, "If you like them, they're all yours. I'll just go find more later."
"Really?" Ron was overjoyed, but when he reached out, he only took a few hairs. He gave one to each person, keeping one for himself.
"Consider this our pay for today," Ron said with a grin. "You can sell the rest and buy Madame Maxime a Christmas present."
Wade glanced at him in surprise and suddenly realized that, away from the pages of the original story, the often self-conscious Ron had grown up.
Perhaps Fred and George had given their younger brother some financial help, so he no longer felt the sting of poverty?
In any case, Ron's wand was now new, his robe no longer had the faded, overwashed look, and his smile seemed far more open.
"Christmas present…"
Hagrid furrowed his thick brows and fell into thought, not even noticing that Daphne had tossed all his shorn hair and beard into the fireplace.
The room was instantly filled with the smell of burning kerosene. Michael quickly opened a window, and Wade whipped up a gust of wind to send the unpleasant odor outside.
…
Two hours later.
Hagrid stood in what looked like a brand-new hut and awkwardly patted his hair and then his chin.
"Feels like I'm not wearing any clothes…"
He muttered uncomfortably.
The long hair that had hung to his shoulders was now cut to just an inch in length, and Daphne had even had Wade turn up the temperature of the Warming Charm so the hair could be curled.
His beard had been almost entirely shaved off, leaving only a short trim to shape his face. Harry exclaimed in surprise, "Hagrid, this is the first time I've ever seen what you actually look like!"
"Isn't that the truth?" Michael said, stroking his chin. "You look thirty years younger!"
"Really?"
Hagrid lowered his hand, happily picked up a mirror, looked at himself and touched his face and his neck, which was now finally able to feel the sunlight.
Without the messy hair and beard, the contours of his face looked softer and younger, his rugged muscles stood out clearly, and his black, beetle-like eyes shone brightly with a clear, innocent light.
"Honestly, you look amazing like this!" Hermione said. "Before, you looked a bit like… like…"
She waved her arms about, struggling to find the right words.
"—Like a wild man?" Hagrid asked casually; he knew some students privately called him that.
"No, I was thinking of a pinecone," Hermione said with a smile.
Everyone remembered Hagrid's previous appearance—the messy hair blending right into his shoulders and arms, and when he wore his heavy fur coat in winter, his belly stuck out, and his arms, restricted by the thick clothing, rested against his sides. He really did resemble a chubby pinecone.
They all burst out laughing, and even Hagrid couldn't help but reveal a smile no longer hidden behind a beard.
Daphne then selected from the wardrobe a deep-blue suit, a white linen shirt, along with a tie, ankle boots, and a belt, urging Hagrid to go into the bedroom and change.
"I promise, you'll give Madame Maxime quite a surprise," Daphne said. "If she didn't notice your height, she might think the school had changed its gamekeeper!"
This time, Hagrid took the clothes without resisting everyone's disapproval of his fashion sense and readily changed into them.
When he came out, awkwardly tugging at his tie, Daphne let out a long breath, as if some pressure weighing on her chest had finally been released.
"I should have done this ages ago," she murmured to her younger sister. "You know, every time I went to Care of Magical Creatures class and saw Professor Hagrid's outfit, it made me feel as uncomfortable as if an ant were crawling on my foot."
Astoria, sitting nearby, giggled at her words.
Afterwards—so the story goes—when Madame Maxime went to tend to her Abraxan horses, she happened to see the newly transformed Hagrid and absentmindedly looped the reins in her hands two extra times.
A few days later, everyone noticed the two of them taking walks along the Black Lake.
