Chapter 540 - 540 – That Won’t Do

"Yorinobu Arasaka and the KK Squad's movements have been confirmed." The Militech technician who had successfully infiltrated Konpeki Plaza'"Yorinobu Arasaka and the KK Squad's movements have been confirmed."

The Militech technician who had successfully infiltrated Konpeki Plaza's subnet looked up and addressed the team's leader. "They've left the top floor. Looks like they're heading to the bar downstairs to rest. Captain, should we move in now?"

The man referred to as Captain stood out among the four—his body reinforced with heavy subdermal armor, Gorilla Arms, and oddly, a set of Lynx Paws that didn't quite match the rest of his cyberware.

A flicker of blue light passed through his optical implant as he listened.

He had the unsettling feeling that something was missing. Like there was a gap in his memory, something forgotten.

But when he saw the same cold blue glow in the eyes of his teammates, an odd sense of calm washed over him. A thought surfaced from the haze.

He was Jun, commander of this squad. And his only concern was retrieving the item their superior had ordered them to acquire.

Their superior…

Who had issued the order?

Flashes of memory swirled in his head, and eventually, he managed to reconstruct a plausible thread. A hidden superior.

With blue eyes.

"Begin the operation."

With that reconstructed memory—fabricated or not—Jun gave the order. "We've unlocked access to the top floor. Yorinobu Arasaka and the KK Squad are no longer upstairs. No reason to delay."

"Yes, sir."

The four of them quickly cleared their hotel suite of any traces they'd been there, removing all evidence. Once satisfied, they entered the elevator, timed for when no one else would be around, and pressed the button for the 100th floor.

Normally, the system would flash an access-denied warning, but their successful subnet breach had overridden that. The elevator began to ascend, and Jun felt the slight tug of gravity. He glanced over at his teammates.

He blinked.

For a moment, they all looked unfamiliar—like strangers he'd only seen once or twice.

That couldn't be.

The odd sensation left a trace of unease. Jun racked his brain. According to his memory, they'd been working together for four years—an elite Militech ops unit. Countless missions. Proven reliability.

Yes. That's what his memory told him.

And memory doesn't lie.

Absentmindedly, he ran his left hand over his right arm.

Gorilla Arms.

He instinctively wanted to swing it, to use something along its side to slash, not punch. But with the others present, he held back.

Still… why the impulse to slash?

His body also felt heavy, even though he was fully acclimated to the subdermal armor.

Was it just nerves? The closer they got to the objective, the more these strange sensations welled up inside him. Memory clashing with instinct—as if the memory wasn't his own.

Impossible.

Ding.

The elevator chime snapped him out of it. The doors opened to reveal a lavish suite. A flash of blue passed through his eyes, and his face returned to its numb, calm expression.

The mission came first.

Militech. New America. The Relic. All of it would be handed to that blue-eyed superior. That was the only thing that mattered.

Jun stepped forward, scrolling through intel from the fixer. "There are eight flagged locations. We're four people—two zones each. Stick to the assignments. Arasaka Senno and the KK Squad might return at any moment. Move fast."

"Yes, sir."

The other three acknowledged with eyes gleaming the same icy blue.

Following the plan, they split up to check their assigned zones. It took only three minutes to locate the likely storage site of the Relic.

"Captain, I've found a potential location."

The squad's only female operative called out. She tapped something on the nightstand, rushed to the corner of the room, and activated a hidden panel. A small safe slowly emerged from the wall. Drawing out her monowire, she began hacking.

Jun scanned the safe. His optics confirmed:

Storage temperature: optimal.

"How long?"

"One minute."

"Everyone prepare to exfil."

At Jun's command, the rest of the squad gathered around her, ready to bolt as soon as the Relic was in hand.

She didn't disappoint. In sixty seconds flat, she had it open.

Inside was a specially designed container.

As team leader, Jun stepped up to grab it—but the moment his fingers touched the handle, he was struck by how heavy it felt.

The Relic's case—with its reinforced materials and temperature controls—was heavier than expected. Even with Gorilla Arms, he felt it.

Before he could dwell on it, the female operative frowned, her usually calm demeanor replaced with alarm.

"Captain, bad news. Konpeki Plaza just issued a security alert. Someone's on their way. And Arasaka Senno and the KK Squad are headed back upstairs."

"Don't panic."

Jun glanced out the window. "The rooftop terrace glass still works. Use internal access to open it, then sever the connection. We'll escape via the edge of the terrace."

He'd noted the rooftop layout earlier. The glass panel on the edge of the terrace was their best bet for a quick exit.

Risky? Sure. But better than being boxed in.

"Yes, sir. I'll—"

She stopped.

As she tried to access the control system, her permissions were suddenly revoked.

Then a voice echoed through the room—completely unexpected.

"Oh no, that won't do. I can't let you run off just yet. If the scapegoats escape, I'll have to think up a whole new plan—and that sounds exhausting."

All four of them whipped around.

A man stepped in through the terrace from the helipad, calm and unhurried.

He smiled at them.

"You really should've checked the terrace," Karl said. "Never know who might be out there, stargazing."
